About this course

Why most listening practice feels disconnected

Graded audio is useful early on, but it trains you to understand graded audio. At some point the gap between classroom listening and a 45-minute drama episode becomes obvious and frustrating.

What you actually watch and hear

The curriculum uses full unedited clips from NHK documentary segments, popular podcast episodes, anime dialogue, and variety show conversations. Nothing is slowed down or simplified.

Cultural context alongside language

A character using けど at the end of a sentence is not just a grammar point — it signals hesitation, indirect disagreement, or invitation for response depending on context. Sessions address these layers specifically.

  • Anime: two genres, shonen action versus slice-of-life, with very different vocabulary registers
  • Podcasts: solo monologue versus interview format comprehension
  • Variety shows: rapid cross-talk, overlapping speech, laughter cues

Self-study between sessions

Each week comes with a media assignment — a specific episode or clip with guided questions. Not open-ended watching, but structured observation tasks.

Felicity Ouwendijk, translator — I had plateaued for over a year. Working through actual variety show clips with someone explaining the wordplay finally moved things forward.
